New Ubuntu releases (and other distros) may not have this issue that Karmic had. I can't tell, because I almost don't use my Asus M2N anymore, but I'm pleased to read that it works from start for you.

So... It seems that my freshly installed Mint 9 (using Gnome) has the vesa driver loaded (xorg.conf) and KMS disabled by default ! Have not needed to add anything to the boot options so far and the system remains stable.

To get me some basic compositing (drop-shadows and Cairo Dock with transparency) in Metacity, I found the instructions on http://tombuntu.com/index.php/2008/... still valid and very useful :)

It's been a while but I'd like to share my experiences with Linux Mint 9 (based on Ubuntu 10.04) on my ASUS M2400N. I have just installed it after booting the Live CD in Compatibility Mode (noapic noacpi irqpoll) and right now it's updating more than 300 packages...

I have not implemented any of the boot options or vesa driver workarounds and the system has been working for over two hours now (doing updates and migration of old home folder) without any glitches. But as soon as I encounter any display freezes or anything like with Ubuntu 9.10 , I'll try the noloapi/nomodeset and vesa driver workarounds and come back here to share what I have learned :)

J'avais utilisé vos conseils à l'époque pour installer Ubuntu 7 mais avait laissé de coté le pb de la Webcam. Par contre pour moi, elle est toujours à l'envers sous Karmic. Une idée ?
Sinon, après 2 ans d'utilisation, je peux le dire : je déconseille à tout le monde d'acheter un Packard Bell...

Je recherchais à peu près <tout> de ce que tu y citais.
En fait, je recherchais principalement :
-> Faire une playlists YP-P2
-> Modification des ID3 des mp3 YP-P2

J'ai débuter un projet de conception d'un programme un peu comme Samsung Media Studio / Emodio mais qui engloberais un peu plus que les mp3 de Samsung (mais pour commencer je ferai que du Samsung).

Je l'ai débuter mais je bloquais justement sur le point des playlists et mp3. Désormais pour le statut de YP-P2 je pourrai faire avancer :)

(Pour info : oui mon projet ne fait que commencer, je le fait sous GTK+ en C donc ça prend un peu de temps, mais si tu veux je donne des nouvelles du prog ;-) )

I'm sorry for you, I don't figure out why you still have this black screen.

You can try to :

have your black screen with nolapic and nomodeset options
boot with acpi=off option
try to find what kernel said when you saw black screen. See /var/log/syslog, /var/log/dmesg or /var/log/kern.log.

No...

I wrote nolapic and nomodeset into my boot options. But without acpi=off, M2N boots into usplash but there is a black screen with a frozen underscore left on the top. No xsplash ...

any ideas?

You're welcome.

You can't boot even with the nolapic option ? I mean : you have to replace the acpi=off by nolapic at boot. My Asus M2400N boots this way.

J'imagine que vous parlez de cette technique, qui consistait à ajouter une ligne au fichier /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.

Vous auriez dû accepter la modification... Mais bon, maintenant, le seul conseil que je peux vous donner est de supprimer cette ligne :

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

Et de redémarrer ensuite. J'espère que cela vous suffira.

Hello, and first of all thank you very much! And thanks you wrote it in english =)
I am actually writing with 9.10 on my Asus M2400N =)
But there is something I don´t get it: we both seem to have the same Asus model but in my case 9.10 will not boot with acpi!? I HAVE to boot with acpi=off otherwise the boot will stop will a black screen very early...

You can use acpi without problems? May you could give me some info how to fix that... Thank you =)

J'avais utilisé votre technique pour avoir le son sur mon portable (BG48) sous ubuntu 9.04. Mais depuis la mise à jour à la version ubuntu 9.10, je n'ai plus de son car j'ai refusé la modification du fichier changé. Savez vous comment faire? Merci

alas, you are right... i tried about EVERY possible switch in xorg.conf but as long as the intel driver and acpi are both active, the X freezes will occur :(

I first tried to turn off MTRR (because I saw it first on the log files), but no result. Then I tried to turn all off :) , I mean all advices in the "Narrow Subsystem it Occurs in" section (and "XAA" as AccelMethod). Also no long term result. Note : the "Accel" option doesn't exist anymore.

I also tried to disable compiz. Didn't fix anything.

I wonder if sticking to the intel driver but setting options like acceleration method, dri or opengl in xorg.conf ( as suggested on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troublesh... ) would make a difference... Have you tested with any of that?
